I am my father’s daughter. My Dad is John F. Lawhon, furniture industry magnet and best-selling author of “The Selling Bible: for people in the business of selling” and “Selling Retail.” Every night at the dinner table, I learned another lesson in business, marketing, sales, being a person of TOTAL integrity, and becoming the best leader possible. Over the last few years, Dad and I have begun working together, for the first time fully melding years of research in the worlds of self-help, business, and education. Looking for a way to facilitate the growth of others’ self-esteem and for an answer to the age old question “How to Be Yourself,” I developed Guru-YOU!, so everyone would have access. Then, with several years experience in the Corporate World and in Education, I began to incorporate my father’s 50 years of business and learning techniques, and the latest scientific research into personal development and education.
In the last few years, I have been studying motivational speakers, intelligence, and diversity, attending countless seminars, and reading all the latest motivational and educational “fad” books. In so doing, and through many morning armchair discussions with my Dad, I realized the need for leadership training which capitalized on the strengths of individuals (not on fixing their weaknesses). I also saw that rather than trying to change the culture of Education completely every time a new “idea” came out, I needed to simply develop my own methodology for true and total human education--for all ages.
I graduated from Pepperdine with a major in English and a minor in Broadcast Journalism. After that, I spent some time in sales, then working in the news business as a producer, writer, and as talent. I became disappointed with the influx of negativity in the media and corporate and day school attempts to clone workers and students. I decided I would go back to the source of these issues…the educational system in our country. I developed my own children’s show--a news show for kids, but it didn’t get picked up. So, I went back to get my Masters of Arts in Education, again from Pepperdine. This degree focused on how the brain learns, research in the classroom, and what is vital in order to “sell education and learning” to every single student. I learned that the brain canNOT thrive in the current mainstream public or private schools, or corporate America, but that something could be done.
Meanwhile I developed Lawhon Educational Assessments, based on Gardner’s theory of Multiple Intelligences, Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, and Bloom’s Taxonomy, which determine where your strengths lie and how you can best develop your persona, career, and life through education. After several years of teaching at two of the most exceptional schools in the country, I was recruited by a major corporation to train supplier management and procurement employees in person, as well as through web-courses. I began to study Lean Manufacturing, and the Toyota Way, and soon was developing Lean Strategies and facilitation training for a major corporation. I went on to upper management at another company, heading up the web-marketing and proposals departments.
All these experiences caused me to dedicate my life to giving people a way to be themselves 100%, be proud of that, and map out exactly how individuals could succeed simply through honoring all of who they are. Of course, this led me to develop my current business, Guru-YOU! and Mira Academy of Higher Learning.
My personal strengths are:
